Is the Public Sufficiently Prepared for Major Disasters?

Future Towns is hoping to offer a range of disaster proof solutions around housing and other buildings. The list of type of disaster is flooding, earthquakes, poor air quality and volcanic activity. The following survey is designed to measure peoples attitudes towards disasters and the closeness or otherwise of disasters to the lives of people living around the world. Please answer the following fourteen questions, and you will be entered into a draw to win £250:

  1. Do you have any experience of large or small disasters happening in or around your home? If yes explain briefly here what happened.

  2. Do you worry about becoming a victim of a major disaster?

  3. Do you feel your home is adequately protected from disaster?

  4. Have you invested any money in protecting your home from disasters, such as flood defences? If yes how much?


  5. If you were offered a solution and it was within your budget would you invest in a disaster protected property or solution?

  6. Would you know where to turn to protect your home from disasters, i.e. government agency or private company offering advice or solutions?

  7. Are you worried about climate change and its possible effects on you or your family?

  8. If you were offered a home for a reasonable cost and it was sited within a flood plain, such as those homes currently being built within the Thames Gateway area, would you purchase the home despite warnings from climate specialists?

  9. Do you believe climate change will ever affect you or your family?

  10. Do you believe the climate scientists and environmentalists when they make claims about threats from climate change?

  11. Do you believe that an asteroid could ever hit earth and affect you or your family, or do you think this is far too unlikely to ever happen to you or your family? /no I believe it is too unlikely

  12. Do you think building homes that are earthquake proof is worth while?

  13. Would you ever consider living within a protected community with several thousand other people (similar to living in a large apartment block)?

  14. How much would you be prepared to spend to protect you or your family from disaster as extra costs on top of buying a new home? Less than 10% more, 20%, 30%, 50%+.
